Art
The art program at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School fosters creativity by teaching skills and techniques that help students develop their own unique artistic styles. Throughout the year, students explore a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, clay, digital art, and more, allowing them to discover the many ways they can express their ideas.
Our curriculum integrates art history, vocabulary, multicultural perspectives, and the elements and principles of art. Students learn color theory, study artwork from various eras, and consider concepts of form and function as they create. Each project encourages them to use the creative gifts God has given them while exploring how art connects to the world around them.
At St. Thomas, our goal is to help, encourage, and challenge every student to reach their artistic potential. Learning culminates in class, group, and one-on-one critiques, where students practice explaining their artistic choices and learn to appreciate the perspectives of their peers. As each child grows, we aim to place before them new tools for expression, cultivating confidence, imagination, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
This year, we have also been utilizing Artsonia to help connect families with their child’s artwork. By uploading projects throughout the year, students build digital portfolios that showcase their growth, creativity, and hard work. This platform not only keeps families involved, but also boosts students’ confidence as they see their art celebrated and shared.
In the spring, we will host an Art Fair, where parents can view their child’s artwork up close. This event gives students the joyful experience of feeling like real artists in a gallery-style exhibition, proudly presenting the pieces they’ve created throughout the year. It is a meaningful opportunity to honor their effort, talent, and the creative gifts God has placed within each of them.
