The STA Experience, As Told by Our Teachers

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is an exciting and important year where students build the foundation for lifelong learning. Throughout the year, we focus on developing early reading and writing skills, number sense, and problem-solving in math, while also exploring science and social studies through hands-on activities. In addition, we nurture their faith by teaching about Jesus, His love, and how to show kindness and compassion to others. Through a balance of play, creativity, and structured activities, students gain confidence, independence, and a love for learning.

First Grade

First grade is an exciting year of growth as students become more independent learners while strengthening their faith, confidence, and academic skills. In a nurturing Catholic environment, first graders build foundations in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies while learning about God’s love, prayer, kindness, and service to others. Through hands-on activities, small group learning, and daily encouragement, students grow into confident, curious, and compassionate children of God.

Second Grade

Second grade is where learning comes alive! The second-grade curriculum builds strong foundations in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies while encouraging independence and critical thinking. Students create hands-on STREAM projects. They also participate in Reading and Math rotations, where learning is differentiated. Second graders refine their writing skills with our TopScore Writing Program. In addition to academics, students prepare for and receive their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, deepening their understanding of faith, as an important part of their overall development. It’s a year of discovery, growth, and unforgettable moments. From creative projects to interactive lessons, every day brings something new to discover.

Fourth Grade

In 4th grade, our students build strong academic skills across all core subjects while developing a deeper knowing of our Catholic faith, continue building on our social skills, becoming independent learners, and becoming critical thinkers. In Language Arts, students learn how to write clear paragraphs and essays, and they practice grammar skills like proper punctuation and sentence structure. Students focus on multi-digit multiplication and division, and they work with fractions, including adding and subtracting them, in Math.  In Science, students explore the natural world through topics like energy and motion, and Earth science. We work on quarterly STREAM projects and research the gems in our rock digs and build solar ovens. We also take a yearly field trip to the Everglades. Students learn about Florida’s history and geography, and they study early American history, including explorers and Native American cultures, and work on STREAM projects in Social Studies. Our students in Reading develop comprehension skills by identifying main ideas and details, and they analyze characters, themes, and story elements in both fiction and nonfiction texts. We also read 2-3 novels each year while also learning about figurative language and literary terms.
